Neighborhood Watch

Your clan is now a significant force in Manside. When everyone is home, the Rass and their followers make up more than a third of the estimated human population of the Old City!

This put strains on supplies, markets, security, you name it. The manor is full to bursting with people.

Unsurprisingly, the locals look to the Rass and the Champion for guidance in managing this change, and in particular with improving security throughout Manside.

Willing to increase security

Will thinks up the idea of reviewing applicants for the new Brotherhood of the Champion's Hall while considering those able to swim as a special marine detachment. But first he must survive in the puzzle canal.

Not exactly local

The Champion's Hall is on Temple Hill, on the other side of the river.

You have neighbors a stone's throw away who want to discuss security.

Willing to increase security

It is an excellent venture and one which puts non-farming, able-bodied family members to work. The Rass should propose that the reconstruction crews be dual purpose in that, by locating them within eyesight or earshot of each other, there can be a network of workers who double as a security force. A relatively even distribution of fighters among the ranks of skilled laboroers creates a multi-functioning unit that can interact with other units. Until one or more is put to the test, outsiders might not suspect the organizational aspect of security within a work detail.

Will begins talking with man's best friend along the roads and paths the heros travel. As the characters journey to and fro, Will asks the dogs he meets what they know about Lunar, Broo and Pavisite comings and goings. Will asks to understand their signals and barks so that he, The Champion of Pavis, can help them and their human families whenever possible.

woof

Understanding the language of nominally non-sentient species is magic beyond the scope of Green Age Languages. Perhaps if you tracked down that dog shaman from the adventure of the Three Snakes Who are One.

Riddle me this

Was I present for that adventure? I do not remember anything about a dog shaman or the 3 snakes who are 1. I do understand your point about the dog language. They are not fully sentient creatures with a green age language.
All the more reason to order a custom saddle and find a hippogiff egg for future aerial patrols.

I think you were. LONG LONG

I think you were. LONG LONG ago. Everyone took secondary characters, and I believe you played Bintoh Brass Charmer.

That's What I Get For Thinking

Oh yeah. I remember now. There was a shamen gathering and Bintoh Brass Charmer had some useful skills plus a helmet making press that was commandeered from a cradle (long ago).

3=1

Also the Three Snakes Who are One was the goal of the adventure--Crowly needed all the shamans to agree in order to bring it forth.

Only One Left

And when the Shamen were successful...? What happens when the three snakes are one? Please refresh my memory.

Ummmmmmm....

off the top of my head, without consulting my notes, an harmonious accord was reached.

Patrols

Speth is willing to set up daily or weekly patrols through the rubble near the Rass Manor and our neighbors. She offers herself and Pilch to be be in charge of patrols, but she expects the neighbors (and the Rass family) to provide some fighting strength to fill the patrols as well as lead some of them. She offers to lead the training unless a more suitable neighbor can fill the role.

She grudgingly admits she might need the sorcerer's help to plan some of the logistics and routes.

"But I know not the ways of mounted combat, so the wide open spaces should be reserved for Oshun and his zebra riders. I will take the twists and turns of the rubble."

I'm In Too

The Power of the Healing Will Warband is a resource that needs combat training while at the same time provides up to 235 able bodies plus 365 orphans up to age 12 to assist as pages, squires, backboys, etc. The bravest among them (the 235) will volunteer for Speth's training while the rest (of the 235) are commanded by Will to "at least TRY to be worthy of the Axe Maiden's tutelage".
These patrols will further strengthen the Rass as everyone becomes more familiar with the lay of the land. Will suggests that these patrols be "irregular". That is to say, "random so that no spy or prying eye can determine for certain when the next patrol will take place. Our security forces must be ready to react at a moment's notice anyway so why not make that the policy?"
Will wants to teach his spear fighting technique to those best suited to that weapon while encouraging those better with an axe to study Speth's style. How does training over time increase a warband's effectiveness?

The Will is not truly a

The Will is not truly a warband. At best, they are equivalent to a very poorly trained clan fyrd. They can be used very easily for Extraordinary Support in quests however.

Doesn't mean that can't change, but my recollection is that the group accepted **ANYONE** who would swear allegiance, not just warriors.

All of them know how to travel in hard circumstances though!

Willing to increase security

Garn Gar Gateguard, the guardian spirit of the Power of the Healing Will warband grants halfway decent benefits to those who swear allegiance to Pavis. These are useful for non warriors: 1) Recognize Traitor 17 2) Eat Dirt 17 3) Frightening Bite 5W.
I think this makes them rather good for scouting/patrols and for guarding. The frightening bite is an extra attack so anyone who already has a fighting skill can add that as a (very unexpected) second offensive power.
After they begin their weapons training they could become a formidable force. In the meanwhile, they need the protection of Will, Speth and other trained warriors. Let's use their strengths and train away their weaknesses.
One strength is sheer numbers. A patrol of 50 people is not to be messed with lightly. They can maintain check points and canvas neighborhoods, looking for signs of bandits, bazacks and broo. They can gather information from neighbors and their daily reports might provide clues about Broo, Lunar and Thanatari activities.
With Rasa's plan, Oshun's tactics plus Speth and Will's leadership these patrols can cover a lot of manside area. How would the nieghbors like this added security? How does training affect a group this size (235) over time?

Nope!

Scouting makes you good at scouting. Biting makes you good at biting.

As a whole, the Power of the Will is entirely lacking in the urban warfare skills needed in Pavis. Doesn't mean you can't start teaching them, but they don't have it. So, as a group: 6.

Not trying to pee in your pool, just making sure you have all the info as you begin putting your resources to work.

Thanks for coming out

Speth would only accept those with some skill in fighting/scouting at this point. We're not trying to field an army. We're just putting together a few squads that can patrol the rubble with some confidence of not getting killed outright or ambushed. In her words: "If they want to learn the ways of the axe then I'll teach them, but I'll not babysit some dirt eaters on a combat patrol..."

Beginning of a New Age

235 adult members of the "Healing Will" must start somewhere. If 47 of them learn scouting and 47 of them learn spear and 47 of them learn axe and 47 of them learn healing and 47 of them learn riding then they can start at a rating of 6 and eventually work their way up to something decent.

tricky

Straight by the rules, there's no way to do this.

I kind of support that.

Imagine walking in to a convent and saying "Sisters, it is time for all of you to learn electrical engineering."

Skilled warriors

Jon, instead of trying to make warriors out of your fanatics, what about just starting a band that starts out as guards/fighters/skirmishers etc. What is the status of the champions of pavis band? Can that be reconstituted in some way? send out a call for recruits? Since you are the champion of pavis I don't think you will get browbeat like Oshun does for asking for members.

Timing is everything

Great idea! Now is a good time to recruit champions for the newly liberated Hall. This new band will train and do the very thing for which it is intended, protect Pavisites.

A guardian spirit may be needed, but it makes sense to renew that war band.

Bros

Formerly, the group was known as Brothers of the Champion's Hall. Its notable quality was fanatic devotion to restoring Pavis and hatred of Uz.

Beginning of a New Age

Now the Brothers of the Champion's Hall can focus on one primary objective, protecting Pavis!

Worthy Pavic warriors (of any race) train together and compete for a spot on the ultimate squad of Champions. Ideally, this elite group should be comprised of champions from each race who can fight as a team, using their racially unique attributes to augment each other. One advantage might be to confuse and frighten adversaries who have probably never dealth with such a diverse squad of opponents before.

What do the other characters have to say when Will suggests his vision of the New Brother's of the Champion's Hall?

How?

And how does this happen?

"Sounds good will-i-am!

"Sounds good will-i-am! Somebody does need to clean out the Champion's Villa"

"More warriors will always

"More warriors will always benefit the Rass and the city. And I can instruct them in the art of axework. But who among us can train them to fight together? I know not the fighting style of trolls or elves other than how to kill them. It is a daunting plan...I like it!"

Willing

I see a future with more cooperation between races including defenders like us who are willing to work together for the Greatest Good! Speth, please keep an eye on those who train and tell me if you see any fighters worthy of your axe training. Oshun, please do the same for fighters who ride. I will do my best to select candidates, like Uzkor, who can and will join tthis select team. I will also do my best to train spear fighters.

There are many more details to be agreed upon, but I like the chances of a renewed Brother's of the Champion's Hall, don't you?
